ACCOUNTABILTY IN COMMUNITY THEATER
The Board of Directors of the Eastern Massachusetts Association of Community Theaters (EMACT) condemns racism in every form, by all perpetrators, both overt and covert, understood or denied.
EMACT is moved to make this statement now because of the unjustifiable murders of people of color, like George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor.
Mr. Floyd, Mr. Arbery, and Ms. Taylor are the recent victims of many who we’ve lost as a result of a system of racism and institutionalized oppression. Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Willie Tillman, Philando Castile, Botham Jean… we say these names and remember many others with heavy hearts, and the knowledge that EMACT must stand now for change.
EMACT’s purpose is to educate, support, and facilitate communication and networking among its members and theater community at-large. In acknowledgement of the long history of racism and oppression of people of color, and in response to the most recent tragic losses of Black and Brown people because of racism and oppression, EMACT commits to:
Additionally, EMACT commits to remaining visible about its intolerance of racism and oppression. We honor the memories of Mr. Floyd, Mr. Arbery, Ms. Taylor, and so many others by codifying their names, and recognizing the losses we suffer as a result of their tragic murders, with a determination and dedication to create change and lead it among our constituency.
